Sustainability at The Island Café 🌿

Caring for the environment is at the heart of what we do. From building our patio furniture with recycled wood to maintaining our on-site compost heap, we take steps every day to reduce our footprint. We also say no to single-use plastics—all of our takeout materials are 100% compostable.

Join us in enjoying the island while keeping it beautiful for future generations! 💚✨

Our Commitment to Local & Green Eating 🌿

At The Island Café, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s how we operate.

🌱 GrowTO Greens: In 2016, Co-Owner Maura McIntyre launched this initiative to explore how much kale can be grown in just 1/100 of an acre. Each summer, we harvest around 480 pounds of kale, donating it to local food banks and community members.

♻️ Recycled Coffee Grounds: Since January 2023, we’ve been collecting used coffee grounds from cafés across Toronto, biking over 2,800 pounds to our gardens. Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, help deter pests naturally, and attract beneficial earthworms—keeping our gardens thriving!

Join us in supporting a greener, more sustainable future. 💚🌎
